Audacity is not only a great tool for creating podcasts, you can also use it to record any sound that plays on your computer. Follow these instructions to find out how:
- Click on the dropdown menu on the main Audacity interface
- Select Wave Out Mix or What U Hear (depending on the version of Audacity you have)
- Press the record button
- Start the audio you want to capture
- Press stop
- Edit as appropriate
If the dropdown menu is greyed out, then follow these instructions:
- Click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/Volume Control
- When the Play Control window appears, click on Properties/Recording
- Put a tick next to "What U Hear" or "Wave Out Mix"
- Slide the volume level to one or two notches from the top
- Click OK
- In Audacity, click on Edit/Preferences and in then the dropdown menu next to recording device
- Select your sound card
- Click OK
- Close Audacity and then reopen it. The dropdown menu on the main interface should now be active
- Follow the instructions from above
Sounds simple.
I used to be able record "what you hear" but I don't seem to have that option any more. Which version of audacity would allow that? The version I am using I presume is more modern. Was it only the older versions that allowed this. I miss this facility.

Hi Eva,
Do you have 'Stereo Mix'? Try that. If not, you can use Total Recorder which you have to pay for, but it is not expensive and does the same job. Here is the link:
