Podcasts and blogs is a recent CILT-SLC case study written by Neil Jones SSAT languages lead practitioner and assistant headteacher of The Elliott School, in Putney, London. The article defines the terms blogs and podcasts, gives some MFL specific examples and then tells you how to get started in a clear and concise way.
The Elliott School has been a Language College since 1997 and according to its website, bases its success in MFL to some extent on:
"exploring new methods and strategies for both teaching and learning especially those involving ICT"
This is certainly true of late with their explorations into the potential of podcasting in a variety of languages and themes. Most pioneering of all in my opinion, is the advanced listening practice they have produced for their AS and A2 students in French, Spanish and German which to my knowledge is the first of its kind in the country.
To make it even easier for students to access the personalised materials, the podcast team at Elliott, headed by Neil have added the recordings to the iTunes directory, so they can be subscribed to and downloaded automatically when a new episode is published.
Like me, Neil has decided to set up a blog to support his work as a languages lead practitioner:
"to build new opportunities to share and develop ideas and strategies to impact on classroom learning."
Images from Neil's LP seminar last year, Developing the curriculum within languages which included national trainer Wendy Adeniji can be found on his blog under Lead Practitioner Events. His seminar this year will take place on Tuesday 13th November and will include a similar range of workshops. You will be able to book a place for this or any other LP event via the SSAT site in due course.
