Checking your friends' updates on Facebook normally requires you to visit the site and login. However, there is a way of creating RSS feeds so you can view the same content from your reader of choice and thus save time.
For your friends' posts feed, click http://www.facebook.com/posted.php
then click My Friends' Links, copy the link in the address bar and paste the feed into your reader. In Google Reader for example, this means clicking the Add a subscription button and clicking Add.
Likewise, for your friends' notes feed, click http://www.facebook.com/notes.php
then click My Friends' Notes, and follow the same procedure as above. For their notifications feed, click http://www.facebook.com/notifications.php
and click Via RSS.
Finally, for your friends' status updates, you need to customise one of the other feeds by replacing for example in the My Friends' Links feed the part of the URL that says share_friends_posts with friends_status.
Thanks to Jamie Zawinski for the heads up!
